SPORTS AGENDA: Serbia celebrate their bronze medal as USA secure gold (2024)

While America’s ‘Dream Team’ were winning another basketball gold, their Serbian counterparts were more interested in celebrating a bronze medal less than a mile away.

The squad, along with their WAGS and coaching staff, took over the ‘Roberta’ restaurant and bar in nearby Bercy Village to party the night away, oblivious to who was winning the final.

The team had a roped off area and even demanded their favourite Serbian music be played.

But the players were less than impressed when proceedings were cut short around 11pm.

The strip of bars and restaurants in Bercy Village is known to close down well before midnight, leaving star man Nikola Jokic & co with little choice but to head back to the team’s hotel close by to continue the celebrations.

IOC bosses deny Thompson lucrative deal

Daley Thompson documentary aired on BBC 2 last month and won rave reviews.

However, it is understood that the Olympic legend had more lucrative offers from other broadcasters lined up, only for po-faced grinches at the IOC to refuse permission to use footage from 1980 and 1984 because those involved were not broadcast partners.

As a result, Thompson was forced to take substantially less from the Beeb.

Convicted peadophiles unlikely to return in 2028

Do not expect a similar furore around the inclusion of Dutch peadophiles Steven Van De Velde at the next Olympics.

The 29-year-old, who was jailed after pleading guilty to raping a 12-year-old British girl, was incredibly allowed to participate in Paris for his country’s beach volleyball team.

However, US laws forbid those with criminal convictions from entering and, while matters tend to be dealt with on case-by-case basis, insiders believe there is little chance of Van de Velde being given the green light for Los Angeles should he and the Netherlands qualify.

Gillingham finds himself the butt of the joke

Eurosport's inability to pronounce the name of one of its most-established athletics commentators has turned into a running joke among staff.

Martin Gillingham, who called the Olympics in 1984 and who has been covering the Games for the broadcaster for no less than 20 years, has been called Mark and Mike, and ‘Jillingham’ throughout Paris 2024.

Lord Coe faces stiff competition in presidential race

The starting gun has fired on the election of a new IOC president to replace Thomas Bach, who revealed on Saturday that he would be stepping down in March next year.

An early dark horse is emerging, according to several IOC Members Agenda has spoken with.

While Lord Seb Coe is expected to run, HRH Prince Faisal of Jordan, himself an IOC Exec Board Member, is also likely to stand as a candidate.

Feisal is highly-regarded by some who believe his diplomatic skills could be valuable given the IOC faces significant issues dealing with various conflicts and the doping and boxing crises.

No-nonsense Hayes true to form after Olympic success

She may have crossed the Atlantic but do not expect straight speaking Emma Hayes to change.

The former Chelsea boss led the US to Olympic gold beforeheading to a post-match press conference room full of filing reporters at the Parc des Princes and immediately remarking: ‘It’s like someone let a f*****g balloon down in here.’

Wind taken out of the hosts' sails in Marseille

Diversity was a winner at the Paris 2024 sailing in Marseille with 19 different nations taking home at least one medal.

However, that meant some of the traditionally strong nations losing out, with Team GB managing two medals and the USA just one.

The biggest disappointments were France, for whom sailing is a national passion, and who could only manage a silver and a bronze on home shores.

Highbury advert offers Gunners a painful reminder

When Arsenal take on Wolves next Saturday fans using the Highbury and Islington Tube station may be in for reminder of what might have been.

Nike have put up a trackside advert featuring an image of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, along with the caption ‘Winning is a tough habit to break’.

Supporters club doubles in size after Euro success

England's trip to the Euros final, coupled with the outrageous cost of tickets on the black market, has seen membership of the Supporters Travel Club surge.

In 2023 the group, which enjoys discounted tickets, had around 8,700 members. Following the competition, which saw fans fork out multiple thousands to watch the final in Berlin, there are now more than 19,000 members.
