Eating paleo coleslaw reminds me of my grandma. She was an old-fashioned farmer's wife and she would always make home-cooked meals from scratch. She always needed a main dish, a vegetable (usually potatoes since they lived on a potato farm), a salad, and dessert.

Paleo Coleslaw Recipe with Paleo Mayo - My Natural Family (1)

I remember we HAD to have dessert every meal, even if it was just something simple like pudding or fruit. She often makes coleslaw for the salad and I loved it with fresh cabbage. When I first started eating Paleo I really missed eating coleslaw, because I couldn't eat the mayonnaise and sugar that was in Grandma's recipe.

I developed this coleslaw recipe made with Paleo mayonnaise, and I LOVE it. No offense, Grandma. I don't know about you but I absolutely love the flavor of coleslaw salad, especially with barbeque sandwiches. There is something about the flavor of coleslaw and BBQ together that I just love. I am super excited to do this recipe for you guys. This recipe uses carrots and both red and green cabbage.

One of the things I like best about coleslaw is that it's crunchy, light and cold. It's so good with something hot, like BBQ chicken or pulled pork. It has such a good contrast, especially from the tang of the vinegar.

Some tips and suggestions for this recipe:

  • Soggy coleslaw is nasty, but it's good if it sits for a little bit. It's best if you make it about an hour before you eat it. If you make it too early, it gets soggy and runny and all the liquid goes to the bottom of the bowl. Gross!
  • You don't have to use homemade mayo, although I really prefer it. A good store-bought Paleo mayonnaise works just fine too.
  • I really do prefer the dry mustard to "regular" mustard, but if you don't have it, just put a little less mayo. in so it won't get too runny.
  • You can do only green cabbage and leave out the red cabbage and carrot if you want. They are there for color, extra crunch and for a variety of vegetables, but aren't totally necessary.
  • If you're feeling adventurous, some fun additions are poppy seeds, apples, sweet peppers, craisins or even bacon. If you try any of these, please comment and let us all know if you liked that addition or not.
  • You can sub apple cider vinegar with another acidic food, such as white wine vinegar, lemon or even lime if you really like limes. If you do limes, you should try some cilantro with it and tell me if you like that.

I would love to know if you try my coleslaw. Please comment below and tell me if you made any changes to the recipe and what occasion you made it for.

I omitted the vinegar because my paleo mayo already had a lot of salt and vinegar in it. Just added the honey and ground mustard. Great!

FAQs

Why is mayonnaise not paleo? ›

Most store-bought mayonnaises — and some homemade versions — contain sugar and vegetable oil, making them off-limits for anyone trying a Paleo diet or a round of Whole30.

Is mayonnaise ok on a paleo diet? ›

The short answer is that, yes, mayonnaise can be Paleo – but there is more to it than just running out to your local grocery store and picking up a container of your favorite go-to brand. The mayonnaise you find on the shelf will generally include ingredients that are not compliant, such as soybean oil.

Is coleslaw with mayo good for you? ›

One cup of regular mayonnaise contains a whopping 916 calories, 78 grams of total fat and 12 grams of saturated fat. It also provides an alarming 1,671 milligrams of sodium. Even if your slaw serves six to eight people, that's still a lot of unnecessary calories, fat and sodium for one dish.

What salad is made from shredded raw cabbage with mayonnaise as a dressing? ›

Most people refer to sliced or shredded raw cabbage coated with mayo- or vinegar-based dressing as coleslaw (or just slaw).

Why can't Paleo eat potatoes? ›

Paleo people regularly ate tubers and wild potatoes. Some people list potatoes as unacceptable because they're a starchy high-glycemic food. But ancient hunter-gatherer communities relied on the calories and carbohydrates in potatoes and other tubers for energy.

Why is vinegar not Paleo? ›

Sharing is caring! Is vinegar Paleo? Strictly speaking, it was introduced to the human diet after the Agricultural Revolution, so it wasn't around in the Paleolithic.

Why are sweet potatoes not allowed on paleo? ›

Yes — sweet potatoes are generally considered a paleo-approved food, however, some paleo dieters prefer to limit their consumption to avoid consuming too many carbohydrates that spike their blood sugar levels.

Why is there no butter on the paleo diet? ›

Dairy. A strict paleo diet does not allow dairy products because hunter-gatherers did not milk cows. This includes milk, butter, yogurt, sour cream and cheese.

Why is KFC coleslaw so good? ›

Fresh ingredients are key to a good slaw, and KFC does alright for a fast food restaurant. You won't find any wilted cabbage pieces, and the carrots are nice and hard as well. What's more, KFC finely dices everything so you don't have to chew that much, and all the flavors and textures blend perfectly.

Which is healthier potato salad or coleslaw? ›

While you're likely to put both these items on your picnic or barbecue plate in Bermuda, coleslaw is the better option. “Coleslaw is lower in fat and lower in sodium and has natural vegetables,” said Hannah Simpson, Clinical Dietitian at KEMH.

Is it okay to eat coleslaw every day? ›

Yes, coleslaw can be healthy! The base of coleslaw is shredded vegetables (traditionally cabbage), so inherently coleslaw is vitamin- and fiber-packed and good for you. The issue is the dressing. Most traditional creamy coleslaw dressing is made with high fat ingredients like mayo and has sugar added too.

What's the difference between cabbage slaw and coleslaw? ›

Technically, coleslaw involves cabbage, whether green, red or napa, while the category of slaws can include all kinds of chopped or shredded crunchy vegetables. The two words are used interchangeably for the most part however.

What is a substitute for vinegar in coleslaw? ›

For 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, swap in 1 tablespoon of either lemon juice, lime juice, cider vinegar, or malt vinegar.

Why do you soak shredded cabbage? ›

Crisp it up: Shredded cabbage stays perky if it's soaked in cold water. This also helps cut the pungent edge. Drain well before combining with other ingredients.

Why is mayonnaise inflammatory? ›

Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Excess consumption of omega-6s can trigger the body to produce pro-inflammatory chemicals. These fatty acids are found in oils such corn, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, soy, peanut, and vegetable; mayonnaise; and many salad dressings.

Why isn't hummus Paleo? ›

I have started on a Paleo diet which means that one of my favorite foods, hummus, is now off limits. Legumes are not part of the program, thus those little chickpeas gotta go.

Is Hellmann's olive oil mayo Paleo? ›
