My new favorite way to cook meat is in the air fryer! So far we’ve loved Air Fryer Chicken Breast, Air Fryer Bacon, Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Salmon, and so much more!

What if I told you that you could have the juiciest, most golden, delicious piece of steak in under 20 minutes? Yep, you read that right!

This Air Fryer Steak recipe puts a decadent steak dinner on the table in a total of 17 minutes (make the kids these Air Fryer Hot Dogs and call it date night 😉).

Striploin steak is coated in simple seasonings and air fried until moist and tender in the middle and crisp on the outside. Serve it with homemade garlic butter and a crispy Baked Potato or your favorite side dishes for a delicious and easy dinner everyone will love!

Ingredients needed for air fryer steak:

  • Steak: I use two 1″ thick striploin steaks — it’s our favorite cut of steak, but any will do! Keep in mind if your steak is thinner it will cook more quickly.
  • Canola Oil: adds moisture to the meat and helps the seasonings stick.
  • Seasonings: you can keep it simple with salt and pepper or use whatever blend of seasonings you like!
  • Garlic Butter: optional, but topping the steak off with homemade garlic butter takes it to a whole new level!

Air fryer steak FAQs

What cut of meat to use?

I use 1″ thick striploin steaks, but other cuts will work as well. Try ribeye, strip steak, sirloin, etc. — just keep in mind that steaks of varying sizes will cook in more or less time.

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?

You can cook the steak for anywhere from 10-14 minutes depending on how done you like it! I do 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium, and 14 minutes for medium-well. Keep in mind that these guidelines only pertain to 1″ thick steaks.

Do you need to flip steak in an air fryer?

You can if you want, but it’s not necessary. I leave the steak as-is for the entire cooking time and it comes out perfectly every time!

How do you store air fried steak?

Leftover cooked steak will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the oven, in a skillet on the stove, or back in the air fryer until heated through.

Tips and tricks

  • Bring the meat to room temp. I always set the steak out on the counter 10-15 minutes before I’m going to cook it to bring it to room temperature. This helps it cook more evenly!
  • Preheat the air fryer. You want the air fryer to be hot before you add in the meat so it starts cooking right away. If you don’t preheat the air fryer, the outside of the meat could burn before the inside is fully cooked.
  • Remove the steak right away. Remove the steak from the basket as soon as it’s done so it doesn’t continue to cook from the residual heat.
  • Let it rest. Let the steak sit for 5-10 minutes before you slice into it so the moisture can redistribute. If you cut into it too soon, you’ll end up with dry meat.
  • Use other seasonings. I use the salt and pepper to keep it simple before I add garlic butter, but feel free to use whatever seasonings you prefer!

Serving suggestions

Serve this air fryer steak with any of your favorite sides! I love it with garlic herb dinner rolls, mashed potatoes or air fryer baked potatoes, roasted veggies, creamed corn, or broccoli salad.

First time I have tried steak in the air fryer. I like my steak medium rare, a little more toward the rare side, I cooked it 10 minutes. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will cut the cook time down by a minute or two. The steak was still juicy and tender.

I haven’t yet had the nerve to put an expensive cut of meat into an air fryer. I’ve always done them on a grill.
    Help me overcome this reluctance!

JUICY Air Fryer Steak - The Recipe Rebel (2024)

FAQs

What temperature do you cook steak in the air fryer? ›

Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 400 degrees F. Season the steak on both sides with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of black pepper. Place the steak in the center of the air fryer basket and cook until desired doneness, about 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium and 14 minutes for medium-well.

Do you need to flip steak in an air fryer? ›

Your steak will cook through, if left on just one side. However, because flipping can place a different part of the steak closer to the heating element (for an air fryer, this is at the top), a steak will cook more evenly if flipped halfway through.

Do I put oil on steak before air frying? ›

Just before cooking, brush oil on both sides of the steak, and season the steak with your other choice of seasonings, such as garlic powder and ground black pepper. Then, spray the air fryer tray lightly with cooking oil. Allow the air fryer to preheat to 400 degrees before adding ribeye steak to cook.

How do you keep meat moist in an air fryer? ›

Using oil in an air fryer is perfectly fine and helps the meat to remain moist and come out looking golden brown. However, a little oil in an air fryer does go a long way. With most cuts of pork, simply rubbing some oil into the meat will be all you need. You can use either regular olive oil or a spray oil.

Are steaks better in the oven or air fryer? ›

Air fryers are designed to cook quickly and evenly, giving you a perfectly cooked steak in just a few minutes. You also don't need to preheat your oven or wait for your grill to heat up, which speeds things up tremendously.

Why is my air fryer steak tough? ›

Thin steaks are prone to overcooking quickly and becoming chewy. To enjoy the best flavor and texture, allow the steaks to come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes before cooking them in the air fryer.

How to cook seared steak in air fryer? ›

Place the steak on the air fryer tray and close the fryer. Allow it to cook for about three minutes and then flip the steak to the other side, allowing it to get a good sear on each side. Cook for another three minutes, or until the steak reaches your desired level of doneness.

Does steak cook well in air fryer? ›

New York strip, filet mignon (tenderloin) and ribeye are all solid choices that will also stay juicy in the air fryer. Just make sure that whatever cut you pick is about an inch thick. Anything thinner will cook very quickly in the air fryer, so the chances of overcooking it become much higher.

Do steaks brown in air fryer? ›

The Air Fryer's high heat ensures a delectable flavor inside and a perfectly golden-brown crust on the outside. This method is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, cooking steaks in the winter or rain when you don't want to be outside, or if you don't have a grill or stove top.

How do you heat a medium rare steak in an air fryer? ›

Allow your steak to come to room temperature (about 30 minutes on the counter). Preheat the Air Fryer to 350°F. Place the steak into the Air Fryer basket to reheat the steak; check every 2 minutes. The cook time will depend on steak thickness, so ensure the internal temperature reaches around 110°F–130°F.

Is it better to cook a ribeye steak in the air fryer or pan? ›

If you are intimidated by cooking steak, this recipe for air fryer ribeye steak is for you! It is truly fool-proof, and you get tender, juicy steak every single time. I used to be skeptical about air frying steak, but it's actually the easiest method.

What to season steak with? ›

There are many spices available for seasoning a steak, with salt and pepper topping the list. However, other spices, like thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and minced onion, are also good options to enhance your steak's flavor. Or, use a one-and-done approach with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

Why is my meat dry in air fryer? ›

Not using enough oil in the air fryer

If you want crispy golden-brown meat, add just 1 teaspoon of oil per serving to the outside of the meat (not to the air fryer). It's not much, but it can be the difference between a crispy, delicious dinner or a dry, burnt dinner.
