In Dublin many years ago, I had a hot toddy made by a bartender sympathetic to my really bad cold: Irish Whisky, hot Irish tea, a bit of honey, and whole cloves stuck into a wedge of lemon. My cold felt infinitely better—or it is possible after a couple of drinks, I just didn’t care anymore.

In place of hot water use hot tea(I use green) So so soothing and cozy

Made two variations, both with herbal tea: Bourbon with Celestial Seasonings Vermont Maple Ginger Tea and a little maple syrup and bourbon and Stonecutter Whiskey with Honey and Fireside Vanilla Tea. Both winners... I like to make these with a good peaty Islay Single Malt too. Nothing says autumn like hot toddies.

Glad we followed the advice of other reviewers and decided to forgo using just hot water. We prepared our hot toddies with Trader Joe’s ginger turmeric herbal tea, Costco’s Kirkland spiced rum, and wildflower honey, garnished with whole star anise, lemon peel, and a cinnamon stick. It was a perfect “cup of cheer” for the holiday season!

Cinnamon is not soluble in alcohol. So add your spirits after letting the cinnamon steep a few minutes in the hot water or tea if you like a stronger cinnamon flavor.

Harney's cinnamon tea 1/4 of a lemon, no sugar with amaro - wonderful!

Just make fresh lemonade and add rum. A pinch of cayenne makes it into an event.

Simple is best with a Toddy, which is oddly one of the few co*cktails that even co*cktail snobs don’t agree has a traditional recipe. For me, this is the jam:1(ish) tbs. honey1(ish) oz lemon juice (I just use half of one lemon)2(ish) oz. Applejack (or a nice apple brandy, Calvados is also great)Top with hot water in your favorite mug. Repeat if needed.Note that Applejack is a whiskey-apple brandy blend so it’s a bit warmer / less fruity.

I love hot toddies, especially when I have a cold. I always use tea, and I recently came up with a new version: the Smokin’ Hot Toddy, which is Lapsang Souchong tea and scotch. Sweeten if you like; I prefer unsweetened.

I love to use Harney’s cinnamon tea in mine!

A gentle squeeze of lemon juice cuts the sweetness a bit and brings the lemon peel forward.

I used 1/2 agave and 1/2 hot honey in place of regular honey. Also used Bullet bourbon and cinnamon stick but no star anise. Results were delicious!

Put a lemon slice studded with 2-3 whole cloves in, much nicer

There is a honey based alcohol called Kas that you can get in the Hudson Valley that is perfect for hot toddy's. Obviously, be careful as you just added more alcohol, but it is a wonderful touch.

This is good with cognac. I used honey, but it's even better with maple syrup. The star anise is like the cool throw rug that ties everything together.
