Euro 2024 news live as France leave out Mbappe and England to change plans (2024)

After England's disappointment against Denmark, attention has turned to France.

England came away with a draw from their second match at Euro 2024, after struggling to a dire 1-1 with Denmark. The Three Lions remain top of Group C but missed their opportunity to secure top spot after Slovenia and Serbia also played out a draw.

Friday's action brought wins for Ukraine and Austria, with France and The Netherlands meeting in the late kick-off. Kylian Mbappe was left out of France's starting XI after suffering a broken nose in their opener.

We'll have all the updates from Friday's action for you right here. We'll also be bringing you the latest from the England camp ahead of the final round of group games.

Euro 2024 fixtures for Saturday

Tomorrow marks the final day with three matches at Euro 2024.

The final round of group fixtures will see groups kick off simultaneously, and then the round of 16 is split across four days.

So, for this bumper Saturday, what can we expect?

The first two games are in Group F, with Georgia against the Czech Republic at 2pm followed by Turkey against Portugal at 5.

Then, at 8pm, Belgium will look to get off the mark as they face Romania in Group E.

We'll have all the build-up and updates throughout the day.

What the rules say about disallowed goal

The BBC panel were debating that disallowed Simons goal long after the final whistle blew in Leipzig.

Trust the English officials to land themselves with a subjective decision after all the easy-to-argue semi-automated offsides we've seen in this tournament.

The rules are clear, but there was still a decision to be made.

Our report from Leipzig

Alex Richards is in Leipzig for Mirror Football, and here's his report from a frustrating evening for both attacks.

VAR took centre-stage, but it wasn't the only flashpoint in a game which had fleeting moments of quality.

Still, we'll want to see more from both teams in their final group game and beyond.

KEY EVENT

Poland out of Euro 2024

The draw in today's late game means Poland are out.

After two defeats from two, they are guaranteed to finish bottom of their group, meaning their journey is over with a game to spare.

They're the first side eliminated this year.

KEY EVENT

FULL-TIME: Netherlands 0-0 France

All over in Leipzig, and no one could find a winner.

France will hope to have Kylian Mbappe back against Poland, though, after he played no part tonight.

The big talking point will be that Xavi Simons disallowed goal - this one could rumble on.

Tom Victor

No Mbappe yet

It's Kingsley Coman and Olivier Giroud on for France, with Dembele and Thuram off.

The Netherlands have also made tweaks, including the introduction of Gini Wijnaldum.

Still no Mbappe..... for now

Tom Victor

Simons' goal stays ruled out

Anthony Taylor has called the two captains over to explain what's going on.

It's a longer delay than most of the VAR calls so far in this tournament, but it's more complicated than most.

The goal remains ruled out. Still 0-0

Tom Victor

Ball in the net... but the flag is up

Xavi Simons finds the net... but it looks it won't count.

The youngster finds the net, but Denzel Dumfries was standing in an offside position.

Was he blocking Mike Maignan getting there? That's what the officials have to decide.

Tom Victor

Another big chance for Griezmann

That's two chances from close range for Griezmann and still no goal.

This time it's N'Golo Kante who plays him in, but the forward doesn't look in control at any point and allows Verbruggen to save.

Tom Victor

France getting closer

Les Bleus are knocking at the door, with Aurelien Tchouameni the latest to come close.

They're still waiting to find a way past Bart Verbruggen, though, with more than an hour gone.

Tom Victor

Back underway - can anyone find a winner?

No changes just yet, with The Nerherlands and France preparing for the second half.

One wonders how much longer it will stay that way...

Alex Richards

Not such Dutch delight

They started really well Holland and have carried a threat.

But France have started to take a little more hold on the game and the Oranje fans in here are getting a bit narked at referee Anthony Taylor for giving fouls against their defenders. They are fouls, it's not like he's wrong or anything.

Griezmann's movement has been outstanding, which is why he's had three excellent chances as well as that early rocket. Yes he's missed them, but if Holland don't get to grips with him in the second half, he'll get another at some point and you'd back him not to miss again.

I worry if this is still 0-0 at 65 minutes that they both settle and take the point. That'll more than do France with Poland to play. It would do enough for the Dutch to keep Austria at arm's length, but given they meet in their last game, it's not the ideal result.

KEY EVENT

HALF-TIME: Netherlands 0-0 France

All-square at the break.

After a lively start, the game has calmed down a little and looks in need of something special to open it up.

Perhaps a 15-minute break and a couple of team talks can make the difference. Or perhaps a certain masked man can make an impact from the bench sometime soon.

Tom Victor

Not much between the sides

Two thirds of the way into the first half and it's a close contest so far.

Both teams have mostly had half-chances, save for that Griezmann opportunity, but both will feel they're close to having the magic needed to go in front.

Tom Victor

Golden chance spurned by France

Adrien Rabiot goes through on goal and has to shoot, but instead attempts to play in Antoine Griezmann.

France's captain for the night can't convert, though, and he then misses the target with a more ambitious effort moments later.

Tom Victor

That's why Frimpong's started

A quick burst from Frimpong almost has the Oranje in front inside a minute.

The winger bursts forward and free of Theo Hernandez, but a big right hand from Mike Maignan denies the Leverkusen man

Alex Richards

Setting the scene in Leipzig

He's not in the lineup but Kylian Mbappe is here, looking like Zorro with his black mask on.

He wasn't allowed to wear his tricolour mask we saw in training on Thursday, thanks to UEFA regulations.

But he's managed to sneak a little flag on this one... even if he hasn't snuck his way into the starting lineup.

Antoine Griezmann takes the armband. He wasn't happy to be overlooked when Mbappe replaced Hugo Lloris as skipper, and no doubt it'll be a source of great pride for France's No.7.

It's loud in Leipzig. Very loud. And very, very orange. It looks about 70-30 in the Dutch favour when it comes to the fans.

KEY EVENT

KICK-OFF: Netherlands 0-0 France

We're underway, with Premier League ref Anthony Taylor getting the two teams up and running in Leipzig.

Will Kylian MBappe play a part today? That might come down to how well France get on without him.

Tom Victor

10 minutes to go

Almost time to see how France will cope without Mbappe...

Savage claims England panic is premature

The reaction to England's draw with Denmark has been all doom and gloom for some, but not for all.

Robbie Savage has seen England make early exits at previous tournaments, while also being aware the recent tournament results have been rather better.

It's all about how you finish, not how you start - that's the verdict in Sav's column.

WAGs pay England stars a visit

Our very own Andy Lines has the latest from the England camp, where players were visited by their wives and girlfriends at the team's hotel HQ.

The visit comes after a brief reunion in the stands in the aftermath of Thursday's draw with Denmark.

England will be back in action on Tuesday, where victory over Slovenia would ensure they top their group.

Shearer comes to Pickford's defence

Former England striker Alan Shearer has defended goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after a nervy moment in the victory over Serbia.

"He's never ever let England down when he has played," Shearer told Betfair. "There was a moment the other night when he came for a cross when he punched it… I thought he should have caught it but the save he made when England were under pressure was a really important one.

"There's no doubt he's England's best goalkeeper, and has been for a while. You can see that he has the confidence about him, I have no fear or worry about having him in goal.

"He can get excited now and again, I guess if you're not involved for long periods then you look to do something, but I don't think that's a worry at all."

KEY EVENT

Confirmed XIs for Netherlands vs France

With Mbappe dropping to the bench, France appear to have pushed Antoine Griezmann forward, with Aurelien Tchouameni coming into midfield.

Opponents The Netherlands have mixed things up themselves, with Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong brought in.

Netherlands: Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Dijk, De Vrij, Ake; Schouten, Reijnders; Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo; Memphis

France: Maignan; Kounde, Upamecano, Saliba, Hernandez; Kante, Tchouameni; Dembele, Rabiot, Griezmann; Thuram.

KEY EVENT

Mbappe out of France XI

France have left Kylian Mbappe out of their starting XI for their game against The Netherlands.

The forward suffered a broken nose in the win against Austria, and drops to the bench this evening.

KEY EVENT

FULL-TIME: Poland 1-3 Austria

Austria have three valuable points thanks to those two second-half goals.

Poland have it all to do if they're to stay in the competition, with France awaiting in their final game.

KEY EVENT

GOAL! Poland 1-3 Austria

Arnautovic makes no mistake, sending Szczesny the wrong way.

KEY EVENT

PENALTY TO AUSTRIA

Marcel Sabitzer races through on goal and rounds Wojciech Szczesny, who brings him down.

Penalty to Austria, yellow card for Poland's keeper.

KEY EVENT

GOAL! Poland 1-2 Austria

Poland have their main man on, but it's their opponents who have what could be a crucial goal.

Christoph Baumgartner's the man to get it, after a Marko Arnautovic dummy give him space to beat Wojciech Szczesny.

Tom Victor

It's time for Lewandowski

The wait is over, with Robert Lewandowski primed and ready to come on for Adam Buksa.

At the same time, Austria goalscorer Trauner is making way for Kevin Danso after receiving treatment, while Poland have also brought on Karol Swiderzki for Krzysztof Piatek.
