Costa's Hummingbird

Nov 22, 2003

Here are some more shots from last weekend. I found this Costa's hummingbird hiding in the bushes at the hummingbird aviary at the Desert Musuem. I have cropped most of the pictures and then reduced to 25% of original. I was using a c-750 with a Hoya +1 close up lens.

This picture is almost comical

I like this one because some natural sunlight was coming in on your left, and the flash illuminated the feathers on the right. There was a difference.

I am saving the best for last. The original is another 8 x 10 quality photo of another species of hummingbird for my collection :-)!

They all showed up just fine.

I now have a standing order from my wife to
look at all your hummingbird photos when
you post them.

Thanks Darrel. I have 2 more to post sometime later on, but they are already in my pbase gallery. I have an accidental up close in flight shot and one of a female working on her nest (in November). Thanks for looking.

Especially when they come up to inspect you. The hummingbirds in the aviary and out of the aviary are so used to humans that they fly right up to you. My red backpack also helps attract the "inspectors". BTW, we have at least ten types of hummingbirds out here in Arizona, but some are at the northern end of their range during the summer visit.

Thanks for the comments Dave.

I found out that without the closeup lens, I cannot get enough of the bird in the image to make a decent 8 x 10. So I am very patient and walk around the hummingbird aviary. Observing and waiting are they keys to finding their perching areas. Sometimes you find a perching area that is nice and close enough for a decent. Then you focus on the branch and wait and wait and wait ...........

Hello Rat,

Great shots of some very cute critters. You are fortunate to have so many species out your way. Unfortunately for me, NJ is not exactly a hummer mecca. We mostly have Ruby-throateds here, although there have been some Calliope, Rufous and Rufous/Allen confirmed sightings (but not by me).

I enjoyed seeing these Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Brian

Thanks for looking Brian,

I have heard of few species being found beyond their normal range. I have the bonus of seeing hummingbirds year round in my yard. The Anna's hang out in my yard all year long. The Costa's is a desert dweller and probably will not make it out your way. In the mountains south and southeast of Tucson, they rent out cabins in the summer because the feeders can attract several varieties of humminigbirds (along with other tropical birds at the northern limit of their range).

My reaction to the remodeling.....

In reply to Bob Myers1 Nov 22, 2003

How much did they spend on this?

There was not much in the way of obvoius changes. I think most of the changes were ones designed to protect the birds during the winter and thus not really noticeable. Thanks for looking.
